I have been around chickens for most of my life.
I do not keep a large flock, just enough to provide what eggs we need for household use.
A friend on another site had some questions about starting and taking care of a flock, so I promised her a detailed report on how we do things way out here in the boonies.
My henhouse isn’t a show piece by any means…just the bare basics which has worked here for many years.
I have a house made from rough lumber which is around 8×12 feet in size. It has one walk-in human door and two small (chicken sized) sliding doors that can be opened and closed without going inside.
The chickens are free to roam during the daylight hours in a shady lot that is around a fourth of an acre. The sliding doors are closed at night to keep them safe from wild varmints that like to eat chickens.
Inside are nesting boxes and a box that holds their feed that they have access to at all times.
There are two natural pole roosts for them to sleep on at night. They put themselves to bed when they think it is time and I just shut the sliding doors. One roost has heat lamps for those near zero nights during the winter.
