Years ago, my mom decided to try planting domesticated blackberries. My father had passed away and she didn’t feel really up to climbing to the top of the hill to pick wild ones. They were always one of her favorite fruits to can for enjoying during the winter months.
I don’t remember the exact name of the variety, but they are thornless (a big plus) and grow very vigorously! The canes can easily get ten feet long, and be loaded with large berries.
When I bought the family farm, there were still some vines growing and I have taken good care of them over the years.
I don’t can as much as Mom did, so I give a lot of the berries away to neighbors, and only use a few to make cobblers, and a couple of jars of jam.
They are just starting to ripen and I made our first cobbler yesterday!
