One of the things I love best about gardening is that it constantly keeps you guessing. Life is never boring.

I wanted a Japanese Maple but they were terribly pricey in the garden centers.

I finally bit the bullet and bought one! It set me back around $30.00 (and that was 20 years ago when prices hadn’t skyrocketed)

I set it out in the perfect spot oh so carefully, and was so proud of it!

Two months later, it died!!! No explanation…no warning…just died!

I was heart-broken!!

A couple of weeks later I was browsing through one of the little department stores that sell just about everything and was looking through some plants that were being phased out. There in a small pot was a little tree with just a few leaves and looking like it was on it’s last legs…..A JAPANESE MAPLE! …sale price $8.00!!

Feeling I had nothing to lose I took it home with me.

Here’s what it looks like now!

What a deal! It grew to be a beautiful tree! I keep hoping to find a small Japanese maple, but I only see big trees costing around $300.

beautiful! i’m so glad it worked out for you. gardening and landscaping is something one would think is easy but there’s planning and execution involved and even then, sometimes it doesn’t work out! but in your case and for the japanese maple – i’m glad it did! Mike

I’ve had similar experiences with Home Depot clearances. I paid $4 each for red pigmy barberry shrubs that have created a beautiful ground cover. I also have a clearance Japanese maple from them but I paid $30. It was late July and stressed. Garden centers only carried a larger size that was several hundred $$. It is now 5 years old and just beautiful. It has rewarded me for watering it and talking to it nicely every day. Sometimes they just need some love.
