Hmm – many years ago the City of Detroit (which is about 12-13 from me) made the national news for their “Devil’s Night” destruction wherein couches were dragged to the street and set on fire and several cars were also set on fire. So, after the publicity, the mayor decided that October 30th, formerly dubbed as “Devil’s Night” would be “Angel’s Night” going forward. The mayor recruited ordinary citizens to go on “Angel’s Night Watch” and people had to leave their porch lights on and no police officers were allowed to be off work that night. They now have occasional issues, but nothing like before. Our City, which is having its share of crime, was not bad the last few years. I have a pole light with a sensor so it glows from dusk to dawn and I have a similar light at the side of the house and I don’t open the door to anyone, any day of the year. I look out the peephole and that’s it.

That went way beyond being just a prank. Sounds so scary.

Sounds like a more benign version of Devil’s Night. LOL

I think every area has it’s own version.

Did any one ever have their outhouse pushed over???

No outhouses in Jersey. And ours in Maine was a three holer attached to the shed… too heavy.
        😉

Ahhh, we called those nights soap night, chalk night, mischief night and then Halloween. Interesting.

I realize that it was not a link I posted. I just did a acreen shot to show what it was. the link is easy to find. I listened to the radio show. Just like me, the woman said she could not find a single person besides herself that had ever heard of tick-tacking.

What did “chalk night” consist of?

In parts of England, this is called ‘Mischief Night’. You can see that it is very similar.

Mischief Night is an informal holiday of pranks, jokes, and minor vandalism celebrated on different dates depending on the region.

    Key Dates

    • 30 October: Celebrated in Liverpool and Merseyside (known locally as Mizzy Night), as well as parts of the United States and Canada (the night before Halloween).
    • 4 November: Celebrated across Yorkshire and much of Northern England (the night before Bonfire Night/Guy Fawkes Night).

    Common Pranks and Traditions

    • Toilet papering: Draping trees, bushes, or houses in toilet paper.
    • Egging: Throwing eggs at windows, doors, or vehicles.
    • Property interference: Removing garden gates, pulling up plants, or taking bins and shopping trolleys.
    • Smearing: Putting soap, treacle, or peanut butter on door handles and car windows.

Very interesting!!! All this is familiar to me, but it seems to have gone out of fashion here. Kids now days have way too many other things to occupy their free time. It is sad, really!
