This is a repost of an article I wrote some time ago about one of my garden experiments. I can’t seem to put my hands/fingers/keyboard on the original, so I may have to just putter around a bit with this one.

In the middle of a discussion with friends just now, about growing peanuts, and it seems like several have given them a try at least once, with varying degrees of success. I had to try it at least one time to see what they looked like growing and to see if I could. (A typical Vero characteristic)

I didn’t know how they grew. Interesting. Kind of like potatoes.

Somewhat, except the attaching sprout starts as a peg above ground and buries itself before growing the peanut.

Wow! You did it! I have never thought of trying to grow peanuts.

This was my one and only try. It was actually easy…just keep them well watered and then step back and let the plants do all the work. I will do a more elaborate post on this some time later if and when I find the rest of the pictures of it.

Hmm – I must have gone to your SPAM folder, but I don’t recall saying anything SPAMMY.

My squirrels would love it if I grew them some. I once had a contingent of squirrels numbering 35-40, but now only about 6-8 … the park where I went every day tore up half the park and destroyed their habitats. It is National Peanut Day!

They did surprisingly well. They require a really long growing season, so I had to start them in the greenhouse.

Funny how the grow underground. My mom grew some in the front flower bed one time and they did fine, looked just like these. Can’t remember if we ate them or not though. 🙂

It’s so neat how they put out pegs and a peanut grows at the end of each peg,

That was my one and only time growing them. It was such fun watching the little plants develop. I have lots more pictures that I will post some time when I run across them again. My picture files are a hopeless mess.
